The Salat of a Person Incapable of Speech

Question: If a person is incapable of speech or cannot talk because his vocal cords have been damaged, how should he perform salat?
ANSWER
Our religion does not order anyone to perform that which he is incapable of doing. A person who is incapable of speech or who cannot talk due to a problem with his vocal cords is exempted from the obligation (fard) of recitation (qira’at) in salat. That he cannot perform recitation does not affect his salat. Similarly, standing is one of the obligatory elements (faraid) of salat. However, an ill person who cannot stand or a person who does not have feet should perform salat sitting. If he is not able to sit either, then he should perform salat lying by making gestures. (Maraqi al-falah)

Question:
If a stammerer performs recitation (qira’at) in such a loud voice that he can hear what he is reciting, it takes much time. For this reason, is it permissible for him to perform qira’at in such a way that he cannot hear his own recitation?
ANSWER
It is not permissible for him to perform qira’at in such a way that he cannot hear his own recitation. For this reason, a stammerer must perform qira’at in a loud enough voice for him to hear what he is reciting, even if it takes much time. (Halabi)

Question:
How should a person who is incapable of speech learn suras that he will recite in salat? How should he perform salat?
ANSWER
He is not obligated to perform qira’at in salat. He must perform the other obligatory elements of salat. He must stand, bend for ruku’, and do sajda.
